A walk around Alden Biesen

This short 4 km walk accompanies the visit to the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen.

This walk is ideal to do after your visit to the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen or to stretch your legs after an event there.

The walk starts from the entrance to the castle (which is in the right of the picture, by the blue flags). Walk up the avenue, which is called the Maastrichterallee.

The avenue was looking particularly beautiful in the autumn sunshine, but will have its attractions during any time of the year.

Part of the grounds of the Grand Commandery have been converted into an all-season walk through the orchards.

It’s a great place to take your packed lunch and enjoy the large picnic tables and benches that have been set our for you. What’s that: you hate preparing picnics? You can order one from the Grand Commandery! (Just click on the picture)

First stop at the end of the Maastrichterallee is this building. In the center is the gatehouse and archway. To the left is the Apostle’s House, which now houses an art gallery and restaurant. To the right is the Trumpeter’s House, where the gatekeeper lived. Both buildings date back to 1663. Click on the photo to go to the restaurant website.

Here’s a video of the Apostle’s House in busier times, during the Ronde van Limburg cycle race:

A typical Limburg scene. You don’t go far in Limburg without seeing orchards and cattle!

Or sheep! The walk circles the Grand Commandery and gives you some interesting views of the place from a distance.

This is not part of the Grand Commandery but is a hotel belonging to the Martin’s hotel chain. It has been built in what was the house of the Commandery’s steward in the 13th century.

Yet another stopping place, this one overlooking the reedbed and pond.

And you know what in the distance.

As I said earlier, this walk is an addition to your visit to the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen. I visited the castle in the morning, enjoyed this walk and my packed lunch on one of the benches, and then visited the uniquely see-through “Reading between the Lines Church” in the afternoon. Together, the castle, the walk and the church make a fine day out in Limburg. Here’s a sneak peek of the church:
